The Italian Interior Ministry ordered on Friday that the Schengen agreement with Spain be suspended, aiming for the closure of sea and air borders, it was revealed in a statement carried by ANSA.
Earlier today, Italy’s Committee on Immigration and Border Security met to analyse the immigration situation at Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi also spoke with his French counterpart Laurent Nunez, with the two agreeing to boost controls along their border.
Ceuta has been experiencing a border crisis after hundreds of thousands of Moroccans mass-crossed the border. Spain’s Interior Ministry previously said that the majority had already gone back to Morocco.
