The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced Friday that it has arranged a brief local ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia — the sixth since late last year — to allow crews to fix a damaged power line supplying Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
“A localised ceasefire facilitated by the IAEA took effect today along the frontline near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), clearing the way for vital repairs to prevent a potential nuclear incident,” the agency said in a post on X.
Technicians from both sides are expected to begin work in the coming days on restoring the 750‑kilovolt Dniprovska power line, once extensive demining of the area is completed, the IAEA noted.
The line has been out of service for more than two months, leaving Europe’s largest nuclear facility dependent on a single 330 kV line to provide the electricity required to cool its six idled reactors. According to the agency, the plant has lost access to that remaining line multiple times in recent weeks, forcing it to rely on emergency diesel generators.
