Hamas has agreed to hand over its weapons and transfer authority in the Gaza Strip to a committee tasked with administering the territory, Nickolay Mladenov, the High Representative for the Gaza Peace Council, said.
“All weapons in Gaza will be handed over to the committee managing the Strip,” Mladenov told the UN Security Council on Wednesday evening. He added that there was now “an opportunity to radically and sustainably improve the lives of Palestinians in Gaza.”
Implementing the roadmap for the territory would not be easy, he said, while noting that Gaza residents had yet to feel the effects of the ceasefire.
Hamas had committed to halting military activities, he added.
“Palestinian civilians are bearing the consequences of Israeli strikes and delays in disarmament,” Mladenov said.
