CAIRO – The Arab Parliament welcomed Australia’s decision to officially reinstate the terms “Occupied Palestinian Territories” and “Illegal Israeli settlements” to underscore the colonial status in the Palestinians territories.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, while addressing the parliament, had said that the Australian government intends to reuse the term “occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem”, and will consider Israeli settlements “illegal”, in accordance with international law.
In a statement issued Thursday night, the pan-Arab legislature deemed the move a crucial development in Australia’s stance regarding commitment to international law and UN resolutions.
The move, also, backs international efforts meant to revive the Middle East peace process, in line with the two-state solution, the statement read.
Meanwhile, the pan-Arab body urged Australia to officially recognize the state of Palestine and stand by the Palestinian people in advocating their just and legitimate right to having an independent state with Al Quds city (East Jerusalem) as its capital.
