Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy said Wednesday the organisation is ready to continue efforts to bridge differences among Libyan parties and promote national consensus to meet the Libyan people’s aspirations for security, stability and development.
Fahmy made the remarks during a meeting with President of Libya’s Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Menfi on the sidelines of his participation in the high-level segment of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Fahmy reaffirmed the Arab League’s support for a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process based on dialogue and consensus among Libyan parties.
He said the process should help end transitional phases, unify state institutions and create conditions for holding presidential and parliamentary elections, MENA reported.
Fahmy also reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for Libya, stressing the need to preserve its sovereignty, independence, national unity and territorial integrity, while rejecting interference in its internal affairs.
The meeting reviewed the latest developments in Libya and ongoing efforts to advance the political settlement process and promote security and stability.
Fahmy stressed the Arab League’s readiness to continue supporting efforts aimed at bringing Libyan parties closer together and helping create a political environment conducive to lasting stability and national consensus.
