CAIRO – Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit has called on all Libyan actors to shoulder their responsibility towards creating the necessary security, political and legal conditions for holding national elections at the earliest opportunity.
In a press release on Saturday, Abul Gheit expressed concerns over the political situation in Libya, which he said threatens of a setback to the difficult period before the signing of the ceasefire agreement on October 23, 2020, an AL official source said.
The current situation in Libya makes it necessary to hold elections as soon as possible in order to renew the legitimacy of Libyan institutions and end the transitional period, Abul Gheit noted.
The source stressed the need for creating a political process that could restore stability and achieve development in Libya, adding that the AL is fully ready to back efforts aimed to set a clear, practical, and scheduled political roadmap with specific deadlines.
