At least eight people — among them four children — were wounded in a shooting late on the U.S. Independence Day holiday in New York City’s Coney Island neighborhood, ABC News reported Sunday, citing the New York City Police Department.
According to the NYPD, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:37 p.m. (0237 GMT Sunday) on West 31st Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The victims included two men, two women, and four children aged 14, 12, 7, and 6, the outlet said. All were taken to local hospitals. Seven victims were reported to be in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman was listed in critical condition.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene but had made no arrests, ABC reported. The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Saturday marked the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
