A firedamp explosion at a private coal mine in northern Türkiye killed two workers and injured five others on Friday, two of them seriously, authorities said.
The blast occurred in the Dereici area of Gelik, in the Kilimli district of Zonguldak province, a major coal-mining region on Türkiye’s Black Sea coast.
Rescue crews from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), firefighters and medical teams responded to the site and brought the miners to the surface. The injured were taken to hospital.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the explosion. No further details were immediately available.
Firedamp, a flammable gas composed mainly of methane, can accumulate in underground coal mines and ignite when mixed with air.
