WASHINGTON ― WhatsApp is finally adding the ability to edit sent messages, a long-requested feature among many users.

The edit message feature is being rolled out to the browser-based version of the messaging service, WhatsApp Web, via its beta programme.

Those using WhatsApp Web will need to opt-in to the beta by going to settings, tapping on “Help”, and then ticking the checkbox for the “Join the beta” option to potentially gain access to the feature.

In our tests, users were able to gain access to the feature as long as they join the beta programme.

However, leaker site WABetaInfo reports that only some beta users have the ability to edit messages, with the rollout planned to be done over the coming weeks.

To edit a message, users will need to open the menu for that message by clicking on the dropdown icon on the top right. Once opened, they will be able to select the “Edit message” option.

Messages that have been edited will have a small note at the bottom next to the timestamp, indicating that they have been modified.

The latest version of the mobile app can show edited messages with no issues, but the desktop app will show a message that says: “A message in this chat was edited. Please open WhatsApp on your phone to view the message.”

It’s worth noting that messages can only be edited within 15 minutes of being sent.

The report from WABetaInfo further read that the feature would be making its way to the mobile versions of the app down the line.
