Egypt classified in Tier 1 according to ITU-Global Cybersecurity Index 11 - Egyptian Gazette

Egypt represented by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), through the Egyptian Computer Emergency Readiness Team (EG-CERT), progressed on Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2023-2024 issued by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to become within Tier 1 countries – Role Modelling.

It’s worth noting that GCI measures the commitment of countries to cybersecurity at a global level for 193 member-state countries at ITU, where Egypt came among the only 12 countries that achieved 100 points from the total points of Index, out of 47 countries classified in Tier 1, compared to 95.48 points back in 2020.

GCI classified countries in accordance with five main axes; namely, the legal axis, which is concerned with the availability of cybercrime legislation and cybersecurity regulations and the organizational axis, which includes national cybersecurity strategies and the efficiency levels of the entity responsible for cybersecurity in the ITU member states.

Furthermore, the index was also based on the cooperation axis, which covers cybersecurity cooperation efforts, as well as agreements and partnerships signed between the public and private sectors.

It was also based on the capacity building axis, which entails how much cybersecurity specialists and research support mechanisms are ready, qualified and developed as well as the rate of launching awareness campaigns.

Eventually GCI was based in its classification for countries on the technical axis that entails response rates to cyber incidents.

In fact, Egypt’s progress on GCI culminates of the state’s efforts, most importantly the launch of the National Cybersecurity Strategy (2023-2027), alongside the efforts exerted in developing human resources, building capacities, as well as qualifying ICT competencies and trained figures.

This also adds to the effective role played by NTRA’s sub-ordinate (EG-CERT) in promoting and supporting cybersecurity and cooperating with international organizations and various countries, in conjunction with raising public awareness of cyber risks and threats to individuals and institutions.
