CAIRO — Zamalek captain Omar Gaber says his side is determined to add to their continental success as they prepare for the first-leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final against Algeria’s USM Alger.
The Egyptian giants travel to Algiers for Saturday’s opening encounter at the 5 July Stadium, carrying both confidence and ambition as they chase another major African title.
Gaber insists the squad is fully focused despite competing on multiple fronts this season, including the Egyptian league, and believes the team’s experience could prove decisive in the two-legged final.
Speaking exclusively to CAFonline.com, the 34-year-old highlighted the unity within the squad and the motivation driving the current generation, who lifted both the Confederation Cup and CAF Super Cup last season.
He also stressed the importance of respecting their opponents, while backing Zamalek’s ability to deliver when it matters most.
How is the atmosphere within the squad ahead of the final against USM Alger?
“The mood in the camp is very positive. There is strong focus among the players because we know how important this match is. We are competing for titles both domestically and in Africa, and that gives us extra motivation.
“We want to increase our number of continental trophies, and personally I am aiming to win my second Confederation Cup after lifting it last season.”
What makes this Zamalek team capable of handling high-pressure continental matches?
“The team has gained valuable experience in African competitions. We have already won the Confederation Cup and the Super Cup recently, so the players understand what it takes to succeed at this level.
“There is great unity within the squad. Everyone is working towards the same objective, and that collective spirit is one of our biggest strengths.”
How do you assess your opponents, USM Alger, ahead of the final?
“USM Alger are a strong team and they deserve to be in the final. You don’t reach this stage by chance.
“They have experienced players and strong support, especially at home. We respect them a lot, but at the same time, we are focused on getting a positive result in the first leg.”
What role does your experience play as captain in guiding the team?
“I have been with the first team since 2010, so I try to share my experience with the younger players and help them prepare for matches like this.
“We have other experienced players in the squad as well, and we constantly remind each other about the importance of staying focused and paying attention to every detail, especially in big games like this.”
What message do you have for Zamalek fans ahead of the final?
“I want to thank our fans because they are the most important part of this team. Their support makes a huge difference for us.
“We will give everything to make them proud. We know how much this competition means to them, and we are counting on their support in the remaining matches, especially in the second leg in Cairo.”
