As Egypt’s flag rose above the podium in Budapest, it represented more than gold and silver. Mustafa Hussein’s title and Mohamed Hassan’s runner-up finish underlined the country’s growing strength in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Against a field featuring Olympic contenders, world medallists and European champions, Egypt produced one of its finest displays in recent years.

Hussein topped the 77kg podium, while Hassan claimed silver in the 67kg division. Together, they delivered a standout performance at the Budapest Ranking Series, one of the toughest events on the United World Wrestling Ranking Series.

Every victory has to be earned. Every ranking point matters. Egypt returned home with medals and momentum.

With the countdown to Los Angeles 2028 gathering pace, the performances carried added significance. They showed a programme turning potential into consistent success.

Hussein delivers

Mustafa Hussein was the standout performer of the tournament.

He opened with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Germany’s Samuel Bellscheidt. He then found another level. Technical superiority wins over Kyrgyzstan’s Aibek Berdaliev and Hungary’s Levente Levai followed, both by an emphatic 8-0 scoreline.

The semi-final was far tighter. Hussein faced European champion Sergey Kutuzov of Russia in a tactical contest that finished 2-2. He advanced on criteria after holding his nerve.

The final demanded more of the same.

Hussein met Moldova’s Alexandru Solovei in another tense battle. The match ended 1-1. Once again, the criteria favoured the Egyptian. The gold was his.

It was a champion’s display. Calm. Disciplined. Clinical when it mattered most.

Silver lining

Mohamed Hassan ensured Egypt’s success was no one-man story.

The 67kg wrestler produced an impressive run to the final. His semi-final victory over the reigning European champion was one of the standout results of the tournament. It highlighted his technical ability and growing confidence.

Only Russia’s Denislom Bamatov stood between Hassan and gold.

The final finished 1-1. The title went to the Russian on criteria. Hassan had to settle for silver. It was a narrow defeat. It did little to diminish an outstanding campaign.

National recognition

Egypt’s success in Budapest was quickly recognised at home.

Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil praised both wrestlers, describing their medals as further evidence of the progress being made across Egyptian sport. He also paid tribute to the Egyptian Wrestling Federation, coaches and support staff for their role in the team’s preparation.

According to the Egyptian Wrestling Federation, led by Saeed Salah, the success was built on years of planning, disciplined preparation and the commitment of the wrestlers and their coaches.

Attention has already turned to the challenges ahead, with preparations continuing for the continental championships, world events and, ultimately, the road to Los Angeles 2028.

Looking ahead

The Budapest Ranking Series attracts many of the world’s leading wrestlers. Ranking points are at stake. So is valuable experience ahead of major championships and the Olympic cycle.

That is why these medals carry extra weight. Every victory comes against world-class opponents. Every ranking point could prove crucial on the road to Los Angeles 2028.

Egypt did not simply reach the podium. It matched the world’s best. Budapest was an important step, not the final destination.

Every international tournament now forms part of the road to the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Ranking points, elite competition and experience will all shape Egypt’s Olympic hopes.
