Miami, USA – In a crucial preparatory match ahead of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, Al Ahly of Egypt were defeated on penalties by Mexican side Pachuca following a 1-1 draw in normal time. The encounter in Miami served as a significant tune-up for both continental champions, who are set to compete in the prestigious tournament in the United States later this month.

The match marked the debut of Al Ahly’s new Spanish coach, Jose Riveiro, who made a single change to his starting lineup, introducing Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane.

Pachuca opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Brazilian forward John Kennedy, who slotted home after a well-executed passing sequence culminated in a precise through ball from Agustín Palavecino.

Al Ahly responded with vigor in the second half. Winger Mahmoud Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ found the equalizer in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a clever assist from midfielder Hamdi Fathi, whose pass bisected Pachuca’s defense and allowed Trezeguet to fire low into the bottom corner.

Both coaches utilized the match for extensive squad rotation. Coach Riveiro made 11 changes for Al Ahly during the second half, notably bringing on recent high-profile signing Ahmed Sayed Zizo, who had only joined the team 24 hours prior.

Despite creating further opportunities in regular time, including near misses from Karim El Debes and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, and a crucial first-half save by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to deny Palavecino a second, the game ultimately went to a penalty shootout.

In the decider, Pachuca displayed perfect execution, converting all five of their spot-kicks. Al Ahly’s Omar Kamal unfortunately saw his effort strike the post, handing the Mexican side the victory.

This result provides both clubs with valuable insights and an opportunity to fine-tune their strategies as they prepare for their respective campaigns in the upcoming Club World Cup.
