Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy applauded the Egyptian national athletes for their stunning performance at the ongoing 2021 Modern Pentathlon World Championship Cairo hosts and runs until June 14.

Egyptian players Ahmed el-Gendy, Ahmed Ashraf, Islam Hamad and Mohanad Tarek qualified for the final of the men’s competitions.

The Championship is the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the rescheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, now taking place in July.
Dr. Sobhi praised the outstanding level of the players participating in the tournament, wishing them all success and qualifying for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.

More than 500 participants from 45 countries – Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Britain, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Spain and Turkey – take part in the men and women competitions.

The minister also lauded the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF), headed by Sherif el-Erian for all its efforts to make the event a resounding success.
Sobhi underlined that Egypt is ready to host international and continental championships thanks to its good infrastructure and the unlimited support of the political leadership.

Egypt will also stage the UIPM 2021 Junior World Championships in Alexandria in July, five months later than originally scheduled after a Coronavirus-enforced postponement.

Twelve Egyptians participate in the competition, six of whom are males and the others females.

El-Gendy led the semi-final qualifiers with 1103 points; Hamed came in 16th place with 1080 points, Tarek ranked 18th with 1079 points, while Ashraf came in 34th place with 1093 points.
