LONDON — Manchester United has confirmed Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered knee ligament damage in a World Cup defeat against Spain.
Ugarte was stretchered off in the first half after twisting awkwardly while making a tackle in the build-up to Spain’s winning goal in Guadalajara.
The 25-year-old held his head in his hands while leaving the pitch and reports suggest he could be sidelined for several months.
Ugarte was assessed by Uruguay’s medical staff on Saturday and will now travel to Manchester for further tests.
“Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain,” the Premier League club said according to AFP.
“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.
“Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain after he failed to make an appearance for Michael Carrick’s team following their defeat against Leeds in April.
He joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and has scored two goals in 69 appearances in all competitions.
