Egypt’s young modern pentathletes offered another glimpse of a bright future, combining speed, precision, strength and endurance to claim 11 medals – two gold, four silver and five bronze – at the World Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The haul was built across individual, team and relay events, with Egyptian athletes repeatedly showing the composure required to thrive under pressure.

Across swimming, fencing, shooting and running, they turned demanding moments into podium finishes, underlining that their success was no accident but the product of sustained preparation and a development system.

Impressive showing

Egypt’s success in Kaunas was spread across the competition, rather than concentrated in a single event. Medals came in individual, team and relay disciplines, with both the under-17 and under-21 squads making their mark.

The gold medals came in the under-21 women’s relay, where Zeina Amer and Jana El-Gendy secured first place. The second gold followed in the under-17 team event, with Moamen Mohamed, Mohamed Ashraf and Mohamed Abdel-Galil combining to take the title.

Those victories provided the headline moments, but they were only part of a broader Egyptian medal haul that continued to grow as the championships unfolded.

Double gold

Amer and El-Gendy delivered Egypt’s first gold in the under-21 women’s relay, producing a performance that added another international title to Egypt’s growing modern pentathlon record.

The second came in the under-17 team competition, where Mohamed, Ashraf and Abdel-Galil topped the standings. Their success highlighted the depth of talent emerging through Egypt’s youth ranks and offered an encouraging glimpse of what may lie ahead.

Four silvers

The Egyptian challenge continued with four silver medals across individual, team and relay events.

Moamen Mohamed claimed silver in the under-17 individual competition, while Mohamed Hassan, Omar Amer and Saif Suleiman combined to take silver in the under-21 team event.

In the under-21 women’s team competition, Jana El-Gendy, Zeina Amer and Jana Attia also secured silver.

Another runner-up finish came in the under-17 girls’ doubles relay, where Ghazal Mahmoud and Mariam Abdel-Nasser added another medal to Egypt’s tally.

Bronze sweep

Five bronze medals completed Egypt’s impressive haul.

Mohamed Ashraf took bronze in the under-17 men’s individual event, while Mohamed Hassan claimed bronze in the under-21 men’s individual competition. Jana El-Gendy added another bronze in the under-21 women’s individual event.

The other two bronze medals came in the mixed relays. Moamen Abdel-Magid and Mariam Abdel-Nasser took third in the under-17 mixed relay. Mohamed Hassan and Jana El-Gendy won bronze in the under-21 mixed relay.

Rising stars

Behind the medal winners is a wider development structure designed to produce successive generations of athletes capable of competing on the international stage.

Amr Shams headed the under-17 national team delegation, which featured Moamen Mohamed, Ziad Ahmed, Yassin El Sherbini, Mohamed Abdel Galil, Abdullah Sameh, Mohamed Ashraf and Mohannad Sami, alongside Ghazal Ibrahim, Nour Islam, Judy Walid, Mariam Abdel Nasser and Miran Mahmoud.

Home recognition

The achievements in Kaunas were also recognised back home, with the Egyptian modern pentathlon delegation received by the Ministry of Youth and Sports following its return from the World Championships.

Sports Minister Gohar Nabil praised the athletes and their coaches, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s sporting federations and athletes as they prepare for future competitions.

Future focus

For Egyptian modern pentathlon, Kaunas was another step towards a bigger goal. The 11 medals were not just a strong result. They showed that a new generation of athletes is gaining the experience needed to compete at the highest level.

With Los Angeles 2028 approaching, Egypt has a strong mix of experience and youth. Established stars such as Ahmed El-Gendy, Malak Ismail, Moataz Wael, Mohamed Hassan and Farida Abou-Hashem are leading the way, while a promising new generation is coming through behind them.

That continuity could prove crucial as Egypt looks to maintain its place among the sport’s leading nations and carry its medal-winning tradition into the next Olympic cycle.
