CAIRO — Egypt’s Omar Hossam El-Din finished ninth overall in the lightweight men’s single sculls at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Duisburg, Germany, delivering one of the country’s best performances at the event.

Competing against 14 of the world’s best young rowers, Hossam El-Din finished third in the B Semi-Final to seal ninth place overall.

The Egyptian international crossed the line in 7:12.08, just 0.70 seconds of second place, with Germany’s sculler coming in at 7:11.38. He pulled ahead of rivals from Tunisia, South Africa, and Switzerland, though the United States claimed top spot in the semi-final.

Throughout the championships, Hossam El-Din showed off his technical skill and steady form, proving he can compete with the world’s leading athletes in his category.

His campaign also delivered a historic first for Egyptian rowing, as he became the first Egyptian athlete to reach the semi-finals of the lightweight men’s single sculls at the World Under-23 Championships.

Sherif El-Komaty, head of the Egyptian Rowing Federation and Treasurer of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, praised Hossam El-Din’s achievement. He described the result a well-earned reward for both the athlete and the coaching team’s commitment.

“Finishing ninth in the world and becoming the first Egyptian rower to reach the semi-finals at the Under-23 World Championships is clear evidence of the progress Egyptian rowing is making,” El-Komaty said.

“We are working to a long-term strategy aimed at building a generation capable of competing at the highest international level. What has been achieved in Germany gives us tremendous motivation to continue investing in young athletes.

“We have every confidence that our athletes can achieve greater success in future competitions,” he added.

The Egyptian delegation in Duisburg was led by Ehab Zare, a member of the Egyptian Rowing Federation’s Board of Directors. Mahmoud Abdel Halim is the national team’s head coach.
