Egypt arrived in Oregon with a ten-strong team. It left with a world champion, a national record, two fourth-place finishes and a growing sense that its next generation is ready to compete rather than simply participate.

Golden breakthrough

The standout moment came from Asil Osama, whose 59.82-metre throw secured historic gold in the women’s javelin at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

For Asil, the victory was the reward for months of hard graft. Since December, she had been training twice — and sometimes three times — a day in preparation for the global showpiece.

She had hoped to improve the African U20 record she already holds, but when the moment arrived, her priority was to reach the podium.

She did exactly that.

Speaking to ON Sport TV afterwards, Asil reflected on a title she had been targeting since the previous year. Yet the 19-year-old is already looking beyond Oregon.

The Mediterranean Games this month provide the next test, followed by future World Championship qualification and, ultimately, the ambition of competing at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Podium pursuit

If Asil supplied the gold, Mohamed Osama showed just how close another medal could be.

He finished fourth in the men’s javelin with 73.77m, missing the podium but establishing himself as a genuine contender on the global U20 stage. Working with coach Ehab Abdelrahman, Mohamed continues to develop, and his Oregon performance suggested that a medal could be within reach.

Malak Abdelghany produced another significant performance in the 3000m steeplechase. Her eighth-place finish was backed by a new Egyptian national record of 10:04.52, turning a strong championship appearance into a national milestone.

Yahya Khaled came even closer to the podium, finishing fourth in the shot put with a personal best of 19.73m — just seven centimetres short of bronze.

Growing depth

The results were significant not only for what they achieved, but for their spread across disciplines.

Egypt’s ten athletes competed in events ranging from javelin, shot put and discus to the hammer, hurdles, race walk, steeplechase and 800m. The performances pointed towards Egyptian athletics developing greater depth, rather than relying on a single standout athlete.

The team’s efforts were recognised by Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, with praise directed towards the athletes, coaches, federation and support staff.

Next challenge

But medals and records are only part of the story. Oregon showed that Egypt’s young athletes can compete on the biggest stages.

Now comes the harder task: turning youth success into senior consistency.

The breakthrough has arrived. The challenge now is to build on it.
