Egyptian swimmers secured a historic start at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games in Italy, earning the delegation’s first two medals in the 50-metre butterfly events.
Abdel Rahman Sameh finished first in the men’s 50-metre butterfly with a time of 23.18 seconds to capture Egypt’s first medal of the Games.
Farida Osman added to the nation’s success by placing third in the women’s 50-metre butterfly with a time of 26.32 seconds, securing the second medal for Egypt.
Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil attended the medal ceremony in Taranto to support the athletes and personally presented Sameh with his gold medal.

He commended both swimmers for their outstanding performances and confirmed that starting the competition with a gold and bronze medal sends a strong message, setting a competitive tone for the rest of the delegation throughout the Games.
