CAIRO — The Arab Judo Championship returns to the North Coast city of New Alamein for a fourth consecutive year, with the event running from August 17 to 21.

More than 11,000 male and female athletes from across the Arab world are expected to take part, alongside their families and team delegations, turning the championship into one of the region’s biggest sporting gatherings.

The organising committee of the “Yalla Sahel” festival said in a statement recently that this year’s edition will feature a number of surprises and exceptional sporting activities.

The events kicked off with the participation of French judo legend Teddy Riner, a multiple world and Olympic champion, in a move aimed at giving Egyptian and Arab judo athletes the opportunity to train and interact with one of the sport’s leading global stars.

Riner shared insights from his international career with the athletes and offered them advanced tactics and technical approaches, as well as advice drawn from his professional experience, providing the next generation of judo players with a unique sporting and educational experience.

A specially constructed, one of the largest judo mats has also been set up to accommodate the large number of athletes and competitions, with comprehensive facilities provided to receive participating delegations and their families and ensure a sporting and organisational experience befitting the scale and importance of the championship.

he championship is part of the “Yalla Sahel” vision, which aims to offer a new concept for the North Coast’s summer season by going beyond concerts and entertainment. The initiative brings together sport, tourism, culture and leisure, creating a more diverse summer experience for visitors, according to MENA.

Through hosting major sporting events and welcoming international stars, “Yalla Sahel” seeks to strengthen the North Coast’s position as a regional and international destination for major sports and entertainment events, attract thousands of visitors, athletes, and their families from Egypt and across the Arab world, support sports tourism, and promote the North Coast as one of the Mediterranean’s leading summer destinations.
