Not every medal shines in the same way. Some represent far more than a place on the podium. They signal progress. They reveal depth. They announce the arrival of a new generation.
Over the course of just a few days, Egyptian judo did exactly that. First came an impressive showing at the European Open in Sarajevo, followed by dominant performances at the African Junior Championships in Casablanca, Morocco. Together, they highlighted a sport gathering momentum and quietly establishing itself as one of Egypt’s most consistent producers of international success.
The results stretched well beyond the medal table. They reflected years of investment in youth development, careful planning and a growing belief that Egyptian judoka can compete with the very best, not only in Africa but on the global stage.
African supremacy
Egypt’s junior and cadet squads arrived in Morocco carrying expectations, but left having exceeded them. The junior team finished top of the overall standings with an impressive haul of 13 medals—six gold, three silver and four bronze—while the mixed team crowned the campaign by capturing the continental title.
Egypt’s run to the gold medal was impressive. They started the tournament with a 4-0 win over hosts Morocco, then beat defending champions Tunisia 3-0 in the semi-finals. Algeria was their final opponents, but Egypt completed a clean sweep with another 4-0 victory to win the title in dominant style.
Ali El-Ramly, Yasmine Abdel-Aal, Abdel-Rahman El-Fayoumy and Shorouk Mohamed all produced decisive victories, underlining the technical quality and tactical maturity that characterised Egypt’s campaign.
The success extended throughout the championships. The cadet team collected 14 medals—three gold, five silver and six bronze—to finish second overall. On the junior women’s side, they topped the standings for the first time in the nation’s history.
Standout performers included Shorouk Attia won gold in the 44kg category. Dalida El-Gharabawy took gold at 63kg. Mahmoud Haitham claimed the 55kg title.
Additional silver medals came through Shorouk Mohamed, Lamar El-Sayed, Ali El-Ramly, Zein Abu Shama and Karim Mamdouh, while Bansia Tahani, Ayten Ahmed Gamal El-Din, Maya Rahmy, Yasmine Abdel-Aal, Adam El-Behairy and Ismail Abdel-Rabou all contributed bronze medals.
The results demonstrated more than individual success. They reflected the strength of Egypt’s judo development system and the growing depth of talent across different weight categories.
European challenge
Continental dominance, however, was only part of the story.
Days before the African Championships, Egypt competed at the European Open in Sarajevo, where the standard was even higher. Facing experienced European opponents provided a tougher test, and the team rose to the challenge.
Hadi Hussein delivered one of the performances of the tournament in the over-100kg division.
His campaign featured successive ippon victories over Hungary’s Janos Balogh and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Harun Sadikovic before overcoming Serbia’s Igor Vracar in the semi-finals. He fell short against Bosnian judoka Vidak Maljevic in the final but still claimed a silver medal.
Omar Al-Ramli also won bronze in the 100kg category. He beat Slovenia’s Timotej Kos and Serbia’s Aleksandar Stojkov in just 23 seconds before narrowly missing out on the final. He recovered to claim bronze with another ippon victory.
Egypt’s strength went beyond the medal winners. Abdel Rahman Abdel Ghani finished fifth in the 81kg category, Mohamed Abu Raqia also took fifth in the heavyweight division. Tasneem Rashdi reached the quarter-finals in the women’s 57kg category.
National support
The results reflected the combined efforts of the coaches, administrators and support staff. Their long-term commitment has helped develop young judokas into athletes capable of competing with the world’s best.
The Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil praised the team’s achievements following the African and European campaigns, reaffirming his commitment to supporting national federations and strengthening athlete development as Egypt looks towards future global events.
Future goals
From Sarajevo to Casablanca, Egyptian judo has done more than collect medals. It has demonstrated the emergence of a generation capable of sustaining success. Africa is no longer the final destination—it is the foundation.
Every tournament now offers another opportunity to learn, improve and compete against the world’s strongest judoka. With the World Championships and the Olympic cycle on the horizon, Egyptian judo is no longer asking whether it belongs among the sport’s elite. It is preparing to prove that it does.
