Local airports prosper despite regional tensions 13 - Egyptian Gazette

By Mohamed Attia

Egyptian airports have reported a successful start to 2026, showing steady growth in passenger numbers under the leadership of Captain Wael El-Nashar.

Despite recent regional challenges that have affected the aviation industry, air traffic in Egypt remained strong and stable through the first three months of the year.

This performance highlights the resilience of the country’s aviation sector and the continued trust that international airlines place in Egyptian operations.

The first two months of the year saw a significant jump in travelers. In January and February 2026, total passenger numbers reached 4,646,578, which is a 15 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025. When looking back to 2024, this represents a massive 53 per cent growth.

These figures show a clear and rising demand for travel through Egypt, driven by efficient airport management and an expanding network of flight destinations.

Even as regional tensions increased in March, the airports maintained their momentum.

From March 1 to March 24, passenger traffic reached 1,798,962, a slight increase over the 1,770,032 passengers recorded during those same weeks last year. This ability to keep traffic moving steadily during uncertain times proves that the Egyptian airport system is well-equipped to handle external changes without disrupting travel schedules.

While some specific airports like Alexandria, Sphinx, Assiut, and Sohag saw minor impacts due to their close flight ties with Gulf markets, the overall network remained healthy.

The diversity of destinations served by Egyptian airports helped balance out these local fluctuations.

By keeping operations running smoothly, Egypt has protected the flow of tourism and solidified its position as a reliable and stable hub for air travel in the region.
