Enhancing safety standards at Cairo airport 13 - Egyptian Gazette

Cairo Airport Company, led by Chairman Magdy Isaac, recently conducted a successful emergency response drill at the Terminal 3 Baggage Handling System (BHS).
This exercise was designed to test the airport’s readiness for potential crises and to measure the speed and efficiency of various departments when responding to accidents. Such simulations are a key part of the airport’s commitment to maintaining safety and operational excellence.

The drill was based on a scenario involving a fire on a baggage tractor at Belt 14, which caused heavy smoke in the area. Upon receiving the report, the Terminal 3 Operations Center immediately activated the airport’s emergency plan. Civil defense and security teams quickly secured the site, evacuated equipment, and restricted vehicle access to ensure the situation was contained and that emergency teams could work without interference.

Emergency services, including firefighting and ambulance units, arrived on the scene promptly to handle the incident. While specialized teams worked to extinguish the fire and clear smoke from the building, ground services personnel secured all passenger luggage and redirected it to the main sorting area. This coordination ensured that the simulated emergency did not cause major delays to the airport’s normal operations.

The exercise was a collaborative effort involving several departments, including engineering, security, and public relations, as well as the Airport Police, Customs, and Health Quarantine. This wide-scale cooperation follows the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It aims to strengthen the working relationship between all agencies at the airport, ensuring they can work together seamlessly during any real-life event.

Chairman Magdy Isaac stated that these drills are essential for protecting lives and property. He noted that the airport prioritizes continuous training and the development of its staff to meet global safety standards. By conducting these practical exercises, Cairo International Airport ensures it remains fully prepared to handle any emergency with the highest level of professionalism and the fastest possible response time.
