Egypt on Saturday witnessed a historic milestone with the grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), attended by kings, presidents, and dignitaries from around the world.

The landmark event crowned years of dedicated national effort to present a cultural and architectural masterpiece that reflects the grandeur and timeless legacy of Egypt’s civilisation.

Standing at the foot of the Giza Plateau, the GEM is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation – the ancient Egyptian civilisation – and serves as a gateway linking the past with the present, showcasing Egypt’s enduring role as the cradle of human heritage.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has issued a decree forming the Board of Trustees of the GEM Authority, which he chairs, alongside a number of distinguished figures. The board is responsible for approving the museum’s general policies, strategic plans, and overseeing its activities.

The museum covers an area of over 300,000 square metres, featuring numerous exhibition halls – each larger than many existing museums in Egypt. It is considered one of the most significant achievements of modern Egypt, designed to be a comprehensive cultural, civilisational, and entertainment landmark, and the foremost destination for anyone interested in Egypt’s grand heritage.

The museum tells the story of ancient Egyptian civilisation, displaying a vast collection of remarkable and unique artifacts, including the treasures of the Golden Pharaoh Tutankhamun, which will be exhibited in full for the first time since the discovery of his tomb in 1922.

It also houses artifacts belonging to Queen Hetepheres, the mother of King Khufu, as well as pieces from the pre-dynastic period through the Greek and Roman eras.In addition, the museum includes spaces for cultural and educational activities, such as a children’s museum, an educational center, temporary exhibition halls, a cinema, and a conference centre. Visitors will also enjoy restaurants, cafés, shops, gardens, and open parks, making it a truly world-class destination.

The GEM utilises the latest technologies in display and preservation, presenting artifacts in a modern, interactive way.The significance of the museum’s openingFirstly, the opening of the GEM reflects Egypt’s immense capability in construction and innovation. It is a place where history, identity, and heritage converge – a project that embodies the depth of the Egyptian character and confirms that Egypt is indeed the cradle of civilisation.

The museum emphasises the greatness of ancient Egyptian civilisation, connecting the authenticity of the past with the spirit of the modern age. It stands as a symbol of Egypt’s dedication to preserving and protecting human memory, and sends a message to the entire world – a message of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect among peoples.

Moreover, this historic opening reaffirms that Egypt is a land of deep history and enduring civilisation. It celebrates the ingenuity of the Egyptian mind, from ancient times to the present day, and serves as a symbol of modern Egypt’s renaissance – a clear demonstration that Egyptian civilisation continues to amaze the world.

This event reflects President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s commitment to elevating Egypt’s name internationally and strengthening its regional and global influence.

His leadership continues to drive diplomatic efforts towards regional stability and peace, particularly through Egypt’s pivotal role in the Palestinian cause and its hosting of the Peace Summit and Gaza Reconstruction Conference.

While Egypt works tirelessly for peace and development, it simultaneously builds its own civilisation, enhancing its tourism and cultural sectors, confirming its place as one of the world’s leading centers of history and culture.

The timing of the museum’s opening – on November 1st – is especially symbolic, as it coincides with the anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb on November 4, 1922. This connection links Egypt’s glorious past with its visionary future, especially with the museum’s location overlooking the Giza Pyramids, a timeless representation of both heritage and progress.

Ultimately, the GEM enhances Egypt’s soft power and celebrates its national identity. It demonstrates President Sisi’s vision of cultural diplomacy as a means of promoting mutual understanding among nations.Through this monumental project, Egypt continues to illuminate the world with its heritage, affirming that its historical legacy remains a vital source of knowledge, culture, and pride.

The museum serves as a meeting place for scholars and researchers from around the globe, fostering cultural exchange and learning. Indeed, Egypt forever stands as the capital of history.
