Here, Egypt stands out, historically recognised for its leadership in Islamic scholarship, presenting a unique model of balancing heritage with renewal, exemplified by its upcoming international conference, “Crafting Enlightened Muftis in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
With escalating crises across political, economic, environmental, and social spheres at local, regional, and international levels, Egypt adopts a distinctive religious model rooted in moderation, tolerance, and openness. This model integrates traditional Islamic teachings with contemporary technological advancements, creating an environment where faith aligns harmoniously with modern life requirements. This approach has secured Egypt a respected global position in combatting extremism and promoting interfaith dialogue.
Reflecting this new digital reality, with its extensive challenges affecting all aspects of life, this international conference is held under the generous patronage of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, demonstrating Egypt’s strategic commitment to renewing religious discourse. The event addresses the complex relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and religious jurisprudence, reinforcing Egypt’s pioneering role in shaping the future of religious guidance in a rapidly evolving technological and virtual communication era.
The Egyptian model distinguishes itself by proactively addressing contemporary challenges rather than merely reacting. Egyptian religious institutions, led by Al-Azhar and Dar al-Iftaa, consistently promote moderate discourse, firmly rejecting extremism and advocating balanced Islamic thought. This conference continues this tradition, hosting a diverse global audience, including religious scholars, technological experts, and policymakers from over a hundred countries.
The digital age has intensified the spread of misinformation and extremist narratives, posing significant threats to global societal cohesion. Thus, the responsibility placed upon fatwa institutions and religious authorities is immense. They must engage with contemporary realities and rapidly evolving developments. Here, the role of religious institutions, especially Dar al-Iftaa, one of the leading Islamic fatwa bodies globally, becomes critical in delivering moderate religious guidance and disciplined fatwas – vital tools for achieving intellectual security consistently and effectively.
Consequently, Egypt has launched impactful initiatives related to the ethical and conscious use of artificial intelligence in issuing fatwas. The Cairo Charter for Fatwa and Artificial Intelligence notably provides clear standards for employing technology within religious contexts.
Emphasising its commitment to renewal, Egypt has established several specialised programs to train young muftis domestically and internationally, led by highly competent trainers aware of community circumstances and contemporary challenges. These initiatives ensure that future religious leaders remain deeply rooted in authentic Islamic tradition while being adept at managing modern technological challenges and emerging intellectual issues.
The conference serves as a significant platform to highlight this pioneering Egyptian vision through innovative initiatives such as the Digital Innovation Lab for Fatwa, a hub for creative solutions in religious guidance utilising artificial intelligence.
