At a time when the world’s attention is focused on the Red Sea as one of the most sensitive maritime corridors, where security tensions increasingly shape the movement of shipping, the skies above the Red Sea appear to belong to an entirely different world.
Up there, no ships are changing course, no aircraft are searching for alternative routes, and no security maps are being redrawn to determine the paths of passage.
Above the waters of the Red Sea, flocks of migratory birds continue along their familiar route, crossing the vast distances between Europe and Africa as if they know nothing of the concerns surrounding the region.
With the beginning of the autumn migration season, flocks of white storks have begun appearing over the skies of Hurghada, Ras Ghareb, Jabal El-Zeit and the Gulf of Suez. Coming from vast areas of Europe and Russia, they are embarking on their annual journey southward toward their wintering grounds in Africa.
It is one of nature’s greatest annual journeys — a journey that requires neither passports, maps nor border crossings. Instead, the birds rely on an instinct thousands of years old and an innate sense of direction that guides them south when the time comes to leave.
In Hurghada, however, the sight was far more than a fleeting appearance of birds in the sky. Above the coastal areas and mountains, large flocks of white storks could be seen soaring in successive formations before continuing their journey southward.
The extraordinary spectacle captures the attention of tourists, tourism workers, photographers and nature enthusiasts, giving visitors to the Red Sea an opportunity to witness one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena: for a brief period, the sky becomes a natural highway along which flocks of birds travel on a journey that will not end until they reach their destination.
The birds’ choice of this route is no coincidence. The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important migration corridors for soaring birds. The birds take advantage of the region’s distinctive geography and the rising air currents generated over mountainous terrain, allowing them to conserve energy during their long journey.
For large soaring birds, conserving energy is not a minor consideration — it can be a matter of survival.
That is why flocks of storks and other soaring birds make use of rising thermal currents, gaining altitude and covering long distances with minimal effort before continuing their journey south.
In this way, Egypt’s mountains and coastlines become part of an extraordinarily precise natural system— one whose details the birds seem to know without the need for signs, markers or man-made directions on the ground.
Perhaps the most striking paradox of this journey is that the birds cross one of the world’s most sensitive regions without altering their course.
While maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has, in recent years, been associated with security concerns and regional tensions, migratory birds continue their aerial journey according to the rhythm of nature.
