Israel appears before ICJ to face genocide charges

South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice ( ICJ) with the first hearing taking place last week.

accused Israel of breaching the 1948 genocide convention, enacted in the wake of the mass murder of Jews in the Holocaust, which mandates all countries to ensure such crimes are never repeated.

South Africa asked the court for a preliminary order to demand Israel stop fighting now, while the court hears the full merits of the case In coming months.

Israel’s foreign ministry accused South Africa of “functioning as the legal arm of the Hamas terrorist organisation” in a case built on “false and baseless claims”.

German football legend Beckenbauer passed away

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer passed away at the age of 78.

Beckenbauer, known as der Kaiser “the emperor”, led his county to the World Cup victory twice, once as the captain of the team in 1974 and other as the manager In 1990.

Beckenbauer was a classy, dominant presence on the pitch for West Germany and Bayern Munich in the 1960s and 70s.

He collected 103 caps for West Germany, winning the 1972 European championship and then the World Cup on home soil having lost In the final to England In 1966, according to Reuters.

His Bayern Munich team was the best club side in the world during the mid-1970s, winning three successive European Cups and three successive Bundesliga titles, and Beckenbauer himself was twice named European footballer of the year.

As national team manager his West Germany team lost in the 1986 World Cup final to Argentina but triumphed four years later in Italy as a combined German team.

Fito escaped from jail, Ecuador in state of war with drug gangs

Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa announced “internal armed conflict” in Ecuador, ordering security forces to neutralise several criminal groups that are accused of spreading violence in the state, according to CNN.

A video circulated on social media showed the masked men storming the television station and forcing staff to lie on the ground while screams and gunshots were heard in the background.

This came after a group of masked and armed men stormed a live TV, set fires in the streets and broke into a university and a hospital in Guayaquil city , according to local media.

The Ecuadorean police announced that it arrested all the armed men, asserting that all the station’s staff and hostages were not hurted.

The authority announced the killing of at least 10 people, including two policemen.

A state of horror widespread in Ecuador after President Noboa announced the state of emergency across the country after Adolfo “Fito” Macias, the most notorious criminal and leader of the powerful Los Choneros drug cartel, escaped from jail in Guayaquil.

It is expected that the state of emergency will last for 60 days, and it will be from 11 pm to 5 am.

Since the state of emergency was announced at least 7 policemen have been kidnapped in 3 different cities, according to what the national police posted on X.

Ecuadorian president Noboa says his country is ‘at war’ with drug gangs who are holding over 130 prison guards hostage amid an outburst of violence.
