The Ministry of Youth and Sports commemorated the enduring legacy of the iconic Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, marking “50 Years of Presence,” as part of the fifth edition of the Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership. The event, held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and in partnership with the United Nations under the theme “Egypt and the United Nations: 80 Years of Representation of the Global South,” brought together 150 young men and women from 80 countries.

The ministry’s Central Administration for Youth Development and the Global South Office hosted journalist Mahmoud Al-Tamimi, a historical researcher and founder of the “Cairo Biography of Umm Kulthum Initiative, 50 Years of Attendance.” Al-Tamimi presented his performance “Souls in the City,” part of his broader project “Cairo is My Address” aimed at preserving the memory of prominent Egyptians. He noted this was the ninth iteration of this specific tribute.

The evening served as an annual celebration of the enduring love for Umm Kulthum. The session traversed her life journey from childhood to her passing, incorporating anecdotes from her devoted fanbase. Discussions also highlighted articles and investigations published about the “Star of the East.” Documentaries were screened, offering insights into her life and her notable support for the Egyptian army during the Gamal Abdel Nasser era. Attendees were also treated to a rare collection of color photographs and broadcasts of some of her legendary concerts.

The Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership, running from May 10 to 25, has gathered 150 young leaders from across the globe, representing diverse executive specialties and active roles in civil society. This fellowship stands as a key Egyptian initiative contributing to international development by empowering promising individuals. The program provides comprehensive support, qualification, and training to equip these young leaders for influential roles, fostering the exchange of capabilities and innovative ideas.
