Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli has appointed Dr. Reda El‑Wakil as the new head of the Cairo Opera House, the Ministry of Culture announced on Thursday.
In its statement, the ministry said the appointment comes as part of its efforts to strengthen the leadership of major cultural institutions and support artistic development across the country.
El‑Wakil previously served as director of the Artistic House for Music, Opera and Ballet at the Cairo Opera. He is also a professor of operatic singing at the Conservatoire of the Academy of Arts and a member of the Cairo Opera Company’s soloists ensemble.
A celebrated tenor, El‑Wakil has won several national and international awards. In 1994 he took first place in the Plácido Domingo competition at the Paris Opera, as well as the grand prize and audience award at the Toulouse International Singing Competition in France. He also received Egypt’s State Encouragement Award in Arts and Literature the same year.
