Commuters at Zamalek’s Safaa Hegazy Metro Station are ready for a delightful surprise, as the familiar rush of daily travel take on a unique twist. For the first time in Egypt, the bustling metro station has been turned into a vibrant art gallery, hosting an international exhibition of caricature art that puts a smile on the faces of passengers from all walks of life.
This unique public exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Culture, features more than 50 playful and thought-provoking works of art crafted by talented artists from 35 countries.
The display, which officially opened on February 2 and will run for two weeks, has enlivened the ordinary commute for travellers, offering moments for reflection, entertainment, and connection amid the daily routine.
The exhibition forms a colourful part of the Ministry’s “Excited for the GEM – And Egypt Still Has More to Offer” campaign, an initiative launched last month to celebrate the long-anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Beyond honouring this global event, the campaign aims to bring art out of its traditional settings and into the everyday lives of Egyptians.
What truly sets this exhibition apart is its location in the heart of the metro where art mingles effortlessly with real life, reaching people who might never step foot in a conventional gallery. Commuters pause, often unexpectedly, to admire works teeming with humour, humanity, and insightful social commentary, reminded in those brief moments that art can inspire, challenge, and unite us all.
