In light of recent concerns raised by a video circulating on social platform Facebook, depicting purported demolition activities on the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Giza, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has released an official clarification.
The Ministry has assured the public that the activity in question does not involve the demolition of any part of the ancient structure. Instead, the video captures the removal of non-archaeological materials that were added several decades ago to conceal the electrical lighting infrastructure of the pyramid.
According to a statement from the Ministry, “The Supreme Council of Antiquities is currently removing these non-original materials as part of an initiative to modernise the lighting system at the Great Pyramid, ensuring that no part of the pyramid’s original stones or structure is disturbed.”
The Ministry reiterated its unwavering dedication to safeguarding Egypt’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage. Additionally, it urged the public and social media users to verify information before dissemination, to prevent unnecessary alarm and misinformation.
As work continues, the Ministry promises transparency and ongoing updates to keep both citizens and history enthusiasts informed and confident in the preservation efforts.
