The 13th International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE), themed ‘The future of ancient Egypt’ is on in Leiden, Netherlands from August 6-11.
Among leading Egyptologists and archaeologists at the event are Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) Secretary General Mostafa Waziry, former antiquities ministers Khaled Anani and Mamdouh el-Damati, and director of the Egyptian Museum Ali Abdel Halim.
The congress is reviewing current scholarship and will consider the question of the place of ancient Egypt in contemporary society and academia.
Discussion will also focus on making Egyptology relevant to the future and how Egyptologists worldwide connect to exchange ideas.
“The 13th edition will be foremost a platform to present the latest research in Egyptology, being the showcase of present-day and future research within its many branches,” the congress website said.
“It will adopt Arabic as one of the congress languages and most general information will be made available in English and Arabic, in recognition of the importance of Egyptian Egyptology and the changing scholarly landscape,” it added.
Lectures and panel discussions of the congress tackling topics such as climate change in antiquity, digital Egyptology, historiography of Egyptology, and protecting ancient Egyptian heritage.
This congress is hosted by a country every four years. The 12th edition took place in Egypt from 3-8 November 2019.
