The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated Egypt’s Field Epidemiology Training Programme (Egypt FETP) as a WHO Collaborating Centre for field epidemiology training.
The programme is affiliated with the Ministry of Health and Population’s Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector.
It is the first centre of its kind in both the Eastern Mediterranean Region and Africa.
The designation reflects Egypt’s leadership in building national and regional capacities in applied epidemiology and public health.
Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said the international designation highlights the institutional and scientific capabilities of the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Sector and supports the country’s efforts to boost health security and invest in human capital.
He added that the designation will enhance Egypt’s preparedness to respond to health challenges, emergencies and epidemics, while enabling the country to play a greater role in sharing expertise, building capacities and providing technical support to neighbouring and partner countries.
Deputy Minister of Health and Population Amr Kandil said the Programme is a key part of Egypt’s public health system.
Since its founding in 1993, Egypt FETP has graduated 31 cohorts and trained hundreds of qualified professionals.
These professionals have helped strengthen disease surveillance and rapid response systems across Egypt’s governorates.
