LUXOR, Upper Egypt  – Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‐Habitat) Maimunah Sharif expressed her pleasure at Luxor’s hosting of the Global Observance of the World Cities Day for this year.
During a celebration held in Luxor on Saturday to mark the World Cities Day, Sharif said Luxor city houses the Valley of Kings and many archaeological sites that date back to thousands of years ago, adding that the city, like others all around the world, contributes to gas emissions production and if the same practices went on, all these cities would be negatively affected.
“We should work to reach the zero-emissions target as agreed during Paris Conference,” she said.
Sharif pointed out to the initiatives and projects launched by the Egyptian government to address the climate change phenomenon, asserting that Egypt is a key player in this field.
She highlighted Egypt’s powerful program launched in 2014 to move towards new and renewable energy, noting that cities shall be re-planned and re-managed in a way that guarantees their sustainability.
Egypt adopts an ambitious development path, she said, calling for placing sustainable cities in the heart of such a sustainable development.
