CAIRO – The Suez Canal has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of transiting US LNG carriers during January this year,Head of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabei said.

Some 51 tankers with a total net tonnage of 5.3 million passed through the Canal. This represents about 50% of the total number of LNG carriers that crossed the canal during January 2021 – an increase of about 90 percent compared to January 2020, he added.

Rabei also highlighted the success of the marketing campaigns launched by the authority in raising the global ranking of the canal and increasing its market share of the LNG trade between the United States of America and Asian countries.

Rabie stressed the authority’s keenness to study all variables of the maritime transport industry market, analyze global competition and work to increase the competitiveness of the canal on various shipping routes.

He also indicated, in this regard, that the authority issued severalpublications and periodical books to attract the largest possible amount of potential LNG trade between the United States and Asian countries by providing very well-studied incentives and discounts in addition to direct communication with major natural gas companies operating in the Asian market.
