South Sinai Governor meets Bishop of St. Catherine monastery, highlights efforts to transform the City into a global tourist destination

Dr. Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai, reiterated his commitment to fostering continued collaboration with the St. Catherine Monastery, underscoring the significant efforts being made to preserve its rich religious and cultural heritage.

The monastery, a prominent symbol of spiritual and historical significance, is central to comprehensive development plans for the entire St. Catherine area. The aim is to enhance the site’s beauty and honor its spiritual importance as the “Land of the Greatest Revelation,” with a long-term vision of transforming it into a premier global tourist destination that showcases its unique character.

The Governor’s remarks came during a meeting with His Eminence Bishop Dimitrios Demianios, the head of St. Catherine Monastery, at the Bishop’s residence in Athens. The meeting was also attended by Ambassador Omar Amer, Egypt’s Ambassador to Greece.

Bishop Dimitrios expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Mubarak and the Egyptian government for their efforts to develop St. Catherine City under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation to ensure the sustainable development of the monastery, positioning it as a key religious and cultural attraction for international visitors. The Bishop also extended an invitation to visit the Governor in South Sinai upon his return from Greece, as part of their shared commitment to strengthening the historic ties between the monastery and the governorate.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides exchanged commemorative gifts. The South Sinai Governorate presented a miniature model of St. Catherine Monastery as a token of appreciation, reflecting the strong desire for continued collaboration that serves the common good and reinforces the deep historical and cultural bonds between the two sides.
