President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized on Wednesday the need to resume direct negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, stressing the continuation of Egyptian efforts to stabilize the ceasefire while coordinating with the international community to launch the Gaza reconstruction process based on the Egyptian initiative in this context.

The President’s remarks came as he received a video conference call from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.

In the call, President Sisi affirmed Egypt’s keenness to consolidate the existing partnership with Germany and aspire to maximize bilateral coordination and consultation on various political, security and economic issues.

He also called for maximizing the volume of German investments in Egypt, especially in the fields of energy and transportation, bearing in mind that Germany is one of Egypt’s most important partners.

The President also expressed his appreciation in this context for the great contribution made by Chancellor Merkel since her assumption of the reins of government in Germany in developing the bilateral relations between the two countries.

For her part, the German Chancellor expressed her country’s sincere appreciation for the successful Egyptian efforts led by the President, which led to a ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides and a calming of the situation in the Gaza Strip.

He appreciated in this context the effective Egyptian contacts with all parties concerned, which contributed to ending the state of tension.

Merkel affirmed Germany’s pride in the friendship ties that it holds with Egypt, which represents an important pillar for maintaining security and stability in the Middle East region and keenness on continuous consultation and coordination with the President regarding various regional and international developments of mutual interest.

In this regard, the German leader also praised President Sisi’s efforts to maintain security and stability and achieve development in the entire region, affirming in this context the commitment of her country to support the course of joint bilateral relations in various fields and support Egypt’s development efforts through the expertise of German companies and increase investments.

President Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s efforts that aim in their entirety to support the current transitional phase in Libya, leading to the desired elections in December, in a way that would help restore the pillars of the state and its national institutions.

Chancellor Merkel, meanwhile, praised the Egyptian role towards the Libyan cause, which strengthened the course of the political process in Libya.

In this context, agreement was reached on the importance of the exit of mercenaries and armed foreign militias from the Libyan lands, which will enhance the smoothness and success of the transitional period, and contribute to meeting the aspirations of the Libyan people for a better future.
