Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reviewed the ongoing development efforts in the Suez Canal region, particularly in Port Said Governorate during his meeting yesterday with Port Said Governor Moheb Habashi, Presidential Advisor for Urban Planning Amir Sayed Ahmed, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Lieutenant General Osama Rabie.

During the meeting, which was attended by Chairman of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority (AFEA) Major General Ahmed Al-Azzazi, and Assistant Professor of Engineering at Alexandria University’s Faculty of Engineering Dr. Hassan Abu Saada, the president was briefed on the progress of both current and planned investment and service projects, aimed at advancing the area’s development.

These projects are being carried out through a partnership between the Suez Canal Authority and other relevant bodies, with active involvement from the private sector. The goal is to enhance the investment environment, facilitate private sector participation, and ultimately improve citizens’ quality of life, said the Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed el-Shenawy.

The president was also updated on efforts to improve the connection between the two banks of the Canal, aligning these efforts with the broader development and strategic objectives of the Canal cities.

Additionally, the meeting discussed ways to enhance navigational and maritime services.

In this respect, the president directed that work on the Canal area projects be expedited, with a focus on the critical logistics zones, Ambassador el-Shenawy said.

He added that the president emphasised that the development of the Suez Canal area and related projects is part of the government’s efforts to improve citizens’ living standards.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening the Canal’s strategic role in overcoming regional challenges that have negatively affected global commercial shipping. This has led to a significant drop in Suez Canal revenues, with an estimated loss of over 60% in 2024, equivalent to nearly $7 billion.

In this context, the president underscored the need to maximise the economic returns from the ports along the Canal and leverage its strategic location to boost national income and investments.

The president also highlighted the importance of transforming the Suez Canal area into a development hub, and a regional logistics and industrial center. Furthermore, the president underscored the crucial role of continued private sector participation in driving these developmental efforts, the spokesman concluded.
