Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit have called for an immediate ceasefire in the Sudan.

The call came in the course of a phone call President Sisi received from the President of South Sudan yesterday, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

The two leaders discussed the latest development in the Sudan, in light of the historical bonds and the distinguished fraternal relations between the three countries, as well as the role of Cairo and Juba in Sudan’s security and stability, Spokesman Fahmy said.

Presidents Sisi and Kiir stressed the seriousness of the current situation and the ongoing military clashes, and reiterated full support for the brotherly Sudanese people in their aspirations for achieving security, stability and peace, the Spokesman said.

The two leaders called for an immediate ceasefire in the Sudan, urging all parties to calm down, and uphold the voice of wisdom and peaceful dialogue, as well as the supreme interest of the Sudanese people.

In addition, they expressed readiness by Egypt and South Sudan to mediate between the Sudanese conflicting sides, as escalation of violence will lead only to further deterioration of the situation, which may spiral out of control, spokesman Fahmy said.

They also underscored that entrenching security and stability is the pillar for guaranteeing the completion of the path of political transitional and achieving construction and development in the Sudan, the Presidency spokesman added.
