Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has called for the building of such a mass of knowledge that can enhance religious preaching on a sound and enlightened basis through emphasis on benefiting from distinguished imams and promoting their learning and performance skills.

The president’s remarks came during his meeting on Monday with Minister of Waqfs (Endowments) Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said. The aim of the meeting was to review the Waqfs Ministry efforts in the fields of preaching, the training of imams, translation and publishing.

During the meeting, the president followed up on the ministry’s efforts to train and build the capacities of new preachers and staff, be it through courses offered at the Waqfs Academy or in co-operation with Al-Azhar and other state institutions.

President Sisi urged consolidating the role of the Glorious Qur’an International Competition in measuring the extent of understanding the meanings, purposes and interpretation of the Holy Qur’an and not to stop at the limits of only memorising it, Spokesman Radi said. The president also called for paying attention to talented memorisers of the Holy Qur’an and the fine quality preparation and qualification of young memorisers.

For his part, Minister Gomaa presented the activities of the Holy Qur’an International Competition that was held recently and the wide international turnout that it witnessed, considering that winning an international accreditation certificate in reciting the Holy Qur’an.

Gomaa also outlined the preparations of the Ministry of Waqfs to hold its international conference next February with wide international participation, under the title of “The Citizenship Contract and its Impact on Achieving Societal and Global Peace”.

Following this presentation, President Sisi called for the drafting of a specialised study on the development of the concept of state from a humanitarian perspective, to be incorporated into the conference’s themes, Spokesman Radi said.

The minister also reviewed the ministry’s efforts in the field of authorship, translation and issuance of series of publications in Arabic as well as various foreign languages.
