Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has stressed the need to evacuate Libya from mercenaries, to curb illegal foreign interference in Libyan affairs, and to help achieve the holding of elections in December.
The president’s remarks came in the course of a phone call he received Sunday from French President Emmanuel Macron, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
In the call, the president reviewed the latest developments of the Libyan issue, and Egypt’s firm strategic position and existing efforts to support the new interim executive authority in Libya in various bilateral, regional and international forums, as well as pushing forward all tracks to settle the military, political and economic aspects of the issue militarily, politically and economically.
President Sisi stressed the distinguished strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and France, noting Egypt’s keenness to continue advancing the frameworks of co-operation at various levels between the two countries, especially at the economic, investment, development, security and military levels.
The president also asserted that Egypt attaches the utmost attention to Ethiopia’s dam issue as part of defending Egypt’s historical rights in the River Nile waters through reaching a comprehensive and binding legal agreement between Egypt, the Sudan and Ethiopia regarding the rules of filling and operating the dam.
The French president noted that he is looking forward to the achievement of a solution that fulfills the interests of all parties as soon as possible, Spokesman Radi said.
The two leaders also agreed on the importance of intensifying joint efforts to combat terrorism in the Sahel region in light of their mutual keenness to support countries of the region to restore security and stability and achieve the desired development, in addition to dealing with the challenge that the phenomenon of terrorism poses to regional security as a whole.
French President Macron affirmed his country’s valuation of the extended and close ties with Egypt, emphasising his country’s keenness to strengthen those ties. He also expressed estimation of the prominent political weight of Egypt at Arab, African and Mediterranean levels, Radi said.
President Macron lauded the vital Egyptian role in resolving the Libyan crisis, and the Egyptian leader’s personal efforts in this regard, which strengthened the political path to solve the Libyan issue and reinforced Egypt’s role as a basic pillar for security and stability in its regional environment and the Middle East region.
He also stressed France’s keenness on maintaining intensive co-operation and coordination between the two countries in this important file, Spokesman Radi added.
