Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has affirmed Egypt’s full and absolute support for the new executive authority in Libya in all fields and in all bilateral, regional and international forums to help it achieve successful management of the current historical stage and hold the national elections at the end of this year. He also highlighted Egypt’s keenness to strengthen close coordination with Libya in the current period.
“This is an important and decisive step to move Libya to a new reality and a sustainable political system based on the will of the Libyan people, with their free choice,” the president said during a meeting with Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Meneifi in the presence of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri and Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council Abdullah Al-Lafi and Head of the Libyan General Intelligence Service Emad Al-Trabolsi and acting Chargé d’Affairs of the Libyan Embassy in Cairo Tarek Al-Hawaij, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
During the meeting, the president expressed Egypt’s reliance on the ability of the Libyan Presidential Council and the government to assume the historical responsibility of managing the current transitional phase and achieving comprehensive reconciliation between Libyans and unifying Libyan institutions, leading to holding the national elections as scheduled in December of this year.
The president also affirmed the continuation of the Egyptian stance towards Libya that aims at achieving the supreme interest of the Libyan state in the first place, which stems from the principles of preserving the integrity of the Libyan territories, restoring security and stability to Libya, building a unified national army, ending foreign interference and removing all mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya.
The Egyptian leader added that Egypt was ready to provide its expertise to the Libyan government in various fields to restore the national institutions of the Libyan state, especially security and police forces, with the aim of achieving security and stability.
For his part, the President of the Libyan Presidential Council expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the sincere Egyptian support to Libya since the outbreak of the crisis until now.
He also appreciated, in this context, Egypt’s pioneering role and its tireless, sincere and continuous efforts in supporting its brothers in Libya as part of the extended and fraternal relationship between the two countries and peoples, especially by contributing to the unification of the Libyan National Army, as well as the vital role of transferring the Egyptian development expertise to Libya.
Al-Meneifi stressed that Egypt has always been the most key factor in activating and supporting efforts to settle the Libyan crisis in various political, military and economic tracks, in the light of the fact that Egypt is one of the countries most familiar with the Libyan reality.
He also expressed his deep appreciation to President Sisi and the Egyptian people for standing by their Libyan brothers in managing the transitional period. He added that he was looking forward to continuing to receive that support during the coming period.
The meeting also tackled a review of the prospects for co-operation and coordination between the two brotherly countries during the coming period, with the aim of supporting the Libyan efforts to lead the transitional phase, especially by qualifying the Libyan cadres in various fields as well as transferring the Egyptian development expertise to Libya, and enhancing its efforts to restore security and stability in all parts of the country.
