Shoukry: Energy sector is one of the most carbon-emitting sectors

The Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the President of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), said the energy sector is one of the most carbon-emitting economic sectors.

This came during Shoukry’s participation in activities of the “Energy Day”, in presence of Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker, infrastructure commissioner at the African Union Amany Abu Zeid on the behalf of Chairperson of the AU Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat and the European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.

In statements on Tuesday, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Shoukry stressed the need of investing in new sources of energy that are clean, low-cost and sustainable, in order to promote efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and achieve the transition towards a green economy.

Shourky said the transition towards a green economy is no longer just a necessity to confront climate change, but has become an economic option that has many benefits in view of the current geopolitical situation and the global energy crisis, the spokesman said.

He underlined that the transition towards clean energy sources should be just, taking into account the socio-economic conditions in developing countries, including African countries, where millions of Africans do not have access to clean and low-cost energy despite the continent’s enormous capabilities to generate renewable energy, the spokesman said.

Shoukry also called for taking advantage of the “Energy Day” to take serious steps to achieve a rapid and just transition towards eco-friendly energy sources, in a way that preserves the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and achieves economic prosperity and sustainable development, the spokesman added.
