South Sinai Governor, Gen. KhaledFouda, announced that the first Arab International Camel and Heritage Championship would be launched in Sharm el-Sheikh on January 20.

The championship, he said, would be held over four days under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah ElSisi.

The governor noted that several Arab states would participate in this major sports event, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar and Oman.

Camel and equestrian clubs in North and South Sinai, and other governorates would take part in the championship, the governor said.

He added that the championship would coincide with the third anniversary of the opening of the camel track in Sharm el-Sheikh.

The track, the governor said, is known as the best in the world.

Contributing to organizing the championship would be a large number of local agencies, including – apart from the Ministry of Youth and Sports – al-Tahrir Printing and Publishing House which publishes The Egyptian Gazette newspaper and its sister weekly, the Egyptian Mail.

Gen. Fouda revealed that a large number of cultural events would be held on the margins of the championship, including folk concerts that would give insights into Arab cultural heritage.

An exhibition of handicrafts would also be held on the sidelines of the event, giving the chance for Sinai Bedouins to showcase their works, the governor said.

Chairman of the Board of al-Tahrir Printing and Publishing House, Eyad Abu Haggag, referred to the importance state institutions attach to camel sports.

These sports, he said, highlight Arab heritage.

He noted that al-Tahrir Printing and Publishing House has already put all its capabilities to serve the championship.

Editor-in-Chief of al-Gomhouria newspaper, one of the publications of al-Tahrir House, Abdel RazekTawfik, underscored Egypt’s extended history in camel racing.

“This championship culminates the sports achievements made by the Egyptian state over the years,” Tawfik said.
