The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), affiliatedto the Ministry of Environment, and the Association for Sustainable Quality of Living (Estidama) has signed a co-operation protocol for the launch of the second phase of the “award for confronting climate change in Africa.”

Minister of Environment and Ministerial Coordinator and Envoy for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) Yasmine Fouad has attended the signing ceremony.

The first phase of the award was launched at the COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh last November, with the aim of encouraging the relevant sectors and stakeholders to follow an ecofriendly approach and mitigate the effects of climate change. It will also encourage stakeholders to apply innovation-based initiatives in science and technology to support the measures to combat climate change and achieve the sustainable development goals.

Minister Foaudemphasized the prime importance of the award as a mechanism for achieving momentum and the participation of different parties in countering the effects of climate change.

The second phase was prompted by the success of the first edition whose winners were honoured during the conference.

The first phase enjoyed large turnout at various levels, local and African, mainly fromwomen with distinguished environmental projects, she said.

Building on the achieved success of the first editionaims to encourage participation of various stakeholders to adopt an environmentally friendly approach, and mitigate the repercussions of climate change, applying initiatives based on innovations, she explained.

The aim is to support measures of confronting effects of climate change and achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), as well as encouraging initiatives towards a better green future for the continent and the world as a whole, on road to the upcoming COP28 in Dubai.

According to Fouad, the award is of four categories: the first is dedicated to large and medium corporations in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation technology, and the second for small, micro and emerging companies owned by ladies. The other two categories are for banks and investors, and universities, research centers and non-profit institutions.
