Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli stressed on Wednesday that investment in the health and education sectors is a top government priority.

He also noted that the state is working to develop the education system, improve the quality of its graduates and build a more efficient and sustainable healthcare system that prioritises service quality and citizen safety.

The premier remarks came during a meeting he called with Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar and Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hindi to follow up on the automation of the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).

General Authority for Healthcare Chairman Ahmed el-Sobky, Assistant Minister of Communications for Digital Transformation and Automation Mahmoud Badawi, and a number of officials from relevant agencies were present at the meeting.

Comprehensive Health Insurance Authority Vice Chairman Ehab Abu Aish participated via videoconference.

During the meeting, Madbouli said expanding the implementation of the Comprehensive Insurance System represents a pivotal step towards establishing an integrated and sustainable healthcare system that meets citizens’ aspirations and fulfils the Egyptian state’s objectives of providing advanced healthcare services.

He unveiled that the meeting is part of the periodic follow-up of the system, which aims to provide integrated, high-quality healthcare services to all citizens and establish the principle of equity in access to healthcare.

For his part, Health Minister Abdel-Ghaffar reviewed the implementation status of the system and its key indicators in the governorates included in the first phase. He said the number of healthcare facilities in the phase has reached around 334, while registered citizens total 5.4 million.

Abdel-Ghaffar added that more than 116 million treatment services have been provided under the system in the first-phase governorates, while the total number of surgical procedures has exceeded 938,000.

Communications and Information Technology Minister Raafat Hindi affirmed that the ministry plays an active role in supporting implementation of the system through several initiatives aimed at leveraging technology to develop healthcare services, facilitate citizens’ access to them and enhance the efficiency of system personnel.

Hindi said the ministry’s efforts include connecting government facilities operating under the system to a fibre-optic network and providing the necessary digital applications for their operation.

The ministry is also supporting the institutional development of the system in Egypt’s governorates through programmes designed to develop and build the digital capabilities of system employees.
