Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi witnessed Sunday the inauguration of the wheat harvest season and a pre-fried potatoes factory in East Oweinat, in the New Valley Governorate, in Upper Egypt.

The inauguration ceremony started by recitation of verses of the Holy Quran.

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of Defense and Military Production Mohamed Zaki, senior State officials and ministers attended the inauguration ceremony.

East Oweinat is a more than 186,000 feddans desert land reclamation project that started in the New Valley Governorate to produce an annual three million tons of various agriculture crops.

In his word during the wheat harvest inauguration ceremony, in the presence the president, Chairman of Watania for Agriculture and Desert Land Reclamation Major General Tawfiq Samy said the total amount of reclaimed lands until the end of 2022 reached 460,000 feddans upon President Sisi’s directives to increase the cultivation area.

The president has issued his directives to increase the area of plantation and realize optimum utilization of cultivated feddans, especially as regards strategic crops and other plants, with the aim of reducing import costs, said the chairman of Watania for agriculture and desert land reclamation.

Commenting on Samy’s word, President Sisi accentuated the importance of rationalizing water used in agriculture projects and making use of groundwater capabilities in East Oweinat, through applying most up-to-date irrigation methods and advanced research trends to meet the market’s needs, save water and prevent water waste in line with the best-in-class quality standards.

Meantime, Sisi underlined the importance of luring more investments and drawing investors’ attention to new areas, as well increasing population density in these plots.

The president noted that the government was able to provide about one million job opportunities in the agriculture sector, a number, which he said could even increase, if taken into consideration the agriculture production process.

He added that Toskha Project has first been set to cultivate 700,000 feddans, as the total area of cultivated lands in East Oweinat and Toshka now amounts to one million feddans, which is equivalent to cultivated areas in three governorates.
