President Sisi urges Trump to end Iran war, warns of grave impact on global economy

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has stressed the urgency of overcoming the current crisis in the Middle East, which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has referred to as the most severe in modern history in terms of repercussions on the energy sector.

Sisi warned that the crisis has triggered two major shocks: a disruption in energy supplies and the resulting surge in prices, Presidency Spokesman Mohamed El-Shennawy said.

The president cautioned that the continuation of the war would have serious repercussions for the global economy, soaring prices of fuel, fertilizer, and agricultural commodities, with particular adverse effects on developing countries, especially those facing fragile economic conditions.

Sisi underscored that any suspension of energy sector activities could take years for production to return to normal levels.

He also expressed appreciation to Egypt’s energy partners for their continued co-operation, noting that Cairo is committed to settling all outstanding dues to relevant companies by June 2026.

Sisi commended the solid and expanding co-operation with Cyprus and the EU in the energy sector, highlighting ongoing efforts to integrate Cypriot gas fields into global markets and link them to Egypt’s liquefaction facilities.

Reiterating Egypt’s concern over the continuation of the war, Sisi recalled his previous appeal to former US President Donald Trump during the Gaza conflict, when he described Trump as uniquely capable of halting the fighting.

The President renewed that appeal, saying: “No one can stop the ongoing war except you. I speak to you in my name and in the name of humanity and peace-loving people. Mr. President, please help us stop this war – you are capable of doing so.”

Sisi also voiced hopes for a swift resolution that would spare the region further destruction, and stressed the need to unify international efforts to end the conflict.

President Sisi made the remarks as he participated in the opening of the 9th edition of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026) – March 30- April 1 in New Cairo, held under the Egyptian leader’s patronage.

The event features high-level international participation, including Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, senior officials, and executives from major global energy and technology companies.

Sisi urged energy companies, particularly those participating in EGYPES 2026, to intensify efforts to increase production, including in renewable energy, to help mitigate the current crisis.

For his part, President Christodoulides voiced pride in visiting Egypt for the 6th time since taking office in 2023, praising the well-established bilateral ties, mainly in energy, and welcoming the signing of a new agreement between the two countries.

He emphasised that energy remains a central pillar of co-operation between Egypt and the EU.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a framework agreement on natural gas co-operation between Egypt and Cyprus, signed by Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi and Cypriot Energy Minister George Papanastasiou.

Earlier, Sisi held bilateral talks with Christodoulides, focusing on boosting ties, particularly in the energy sector.

He expressed Egypt’s aspiration to elevate relations to the level of a strategic partnership, reflecting the depth of co-operation and coordination between the two countries in regional and international forums.

The discussions also covered regional developments, with El-Sisi reiterating Egypt’s firm condemnation of attacks on Arab states and stressing the importance of political solutions to prevent further deterioration.
