CAIRO – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli inaugurated the Gas Recovery Project for LPG production at the Nasr Petroleum Refinery in Suez on Sunday.

The premier also inspected ongoing development works at Nasr refinery that aimed at boosting the refinery’s production capacity.

Established in 1911, the Nasr Petroleum Refinery is one of Egypt’s and the region’s oldest and most historic refining facilities.

Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi briefed Madbouli on the project, noting that it carries significant economic and environmental benefits.

The project aims at maximizing the value of gases generated from production units by recovering them instead of flaring, allowing the extraction of high-value petroleum products such as LPG.

This, he said, increases economic returns while reducing harmful emissions. The project also produces naphtha, a key feedstock for high-octane gasoline.

Badawi added that the new Gas Recovery Project reflects the ministry’s strategic focus on maximizing the use of existing refinery infrastructure, enhancing output to reduce import bills, and cutting carbon emissions.

He praised Suez Governorate as a long-standing hub of Egypt’s petroleum industry, playing a vital role in supplying the domestic market with key petroleum products.

Mohamed Abdullah, Chairman of Nasr Petroleum Company, said the refinery operates five production units with a total capacity of about 7.7 million tons per year, covering part of Egypt’s local demand for essential petroleum products such as LPG, diesel, naphtha, kerosene, jet fuel, fuel oil, and asphalt.

He noted that, following the commissioning of the new unit, the refinery now operates three gas recovery units for LPG production, with the latest project costing around EGP 1.1 billion and having a design capacity of 340,000 tons per year.

The project, he said, boosts output of LPG and high-quality naphtha used in high-octane gasoline production, underscoring Nasr Petroleum’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.
