Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has inspected the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project as part of his tour of a number of Ministry of Transport projects in Cairo and Giza.
The second phase extends for 40 kilometres from Ain Sokhna Station, at the Ring Road and Ain Sokhna Road intersection, to Zewail Station at the Ring Road and Ahmed Zuwail Axis intersection in 6th of October City.
It comprises 15 stations, bringing the total number across the first and second phases to 31.
During the tour, Madbouly stressed that the state attaches great importance to modern mass transit projects as a cornerstone of sustainable development and improved quality of life.
He said the expansion of integrated public transport networks is essential to accommodating Greater Cairo’s rapid urban growth, improving connectivity and meeting citizens’ present and future mobility needs.
The prime minister further highlighted the BRT system as an important component of the State’s integrated transport network, providing a fast, safe, modern and environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles, while helping to ease congestion, reduce journey times and support sustainable urban development.
During the tour, the prime minister inspected Sun Capital Station, a strategically located facility featuring bus charging and maintenance infrastructure, passenger terminals, parking areas, workshops and administrative facilities.
He also travelled by BRT from Sun Capital to Maadi, reviewing the readiness of stations along the second phase for trial operations.
Minister of Transport Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, for his part, said the second phase is vital to facilitating citizens’ mobility and maximising the use of mass transit.
He noted that strong ridership during the first phase has demonstrated the project’s effectiveness in easing traffic and reducing journey times through dedicated BRT lanes.
El-Wazir added that 320 locally manufactured electric buses are expected to serve the first two phases by the end of 2026, supporting the ministry’s strategy to reduce dependence on private vehicles, protect the environment and provide high-quality public transport.
The project will also integrate with Metro, Light Rail Transit and Monorail networks, strengthening connectivity between key areas across Greater Cairo.
